IgA nephropathy is a kidney disease in which the immune system inflames the tiny filtering units inside the kidney, and in aggressive cases it can also damage the liver, skin, and heart. Atacicept is a lab-made protein that binds and blocks two immune signals, BLyS and APRIL, that tell B cells to multiply and churn out antibodies. Because those antibodies are thought to drive the kidney inflammation, quieting B cells this way may slow the damage that pushes patients toward dialysis.
