Read original at drugs.com ↗ Background Drug-class context · Wikipedia Cipepofol (development code HSK3486, also known as ciprofol) is a short-acting intravenous general anesthetic and sedative-hypnotic. It is chemically related to propofol — a 2,6-diisopropylphenol — but is 4 to 6 times more potent as a GABA-A receptor positive allosteric modulator, permitting lower doses with a narrower therapeutic index that Haisco positions as offering more predictable haemodynamic and respiratory effects. Cipepofol was first approved in China in December 2020 and is widely used there for procedural sedation, ICU sedation, and general anesthesia induction/maintenance. The June 1, 2026 U.S. FDA approval of Cypsedo (Haisco's trade name in the U.S.) is the first FDA marketing authorization for a Chinese-originated innovative intravenous anesthetic. It enters a U.S. market dominated by propofol (Diprivan and generics), where propofol shortages have periodically motivated interest in alternative short-acting IV anesthetics.
